P-A-P-A Schaef and I headed out to Seattle last weekend to take in a weekend at The Gorge Ampitheater with the one and only Dave Matthews Band. We saw a bit of history, in that DMB has never done a three show set without repeating at least one song. So we saw three completely unique shows in a beautiful environment. And we got to do some hiking, check out the city, and drive...a lot. Here's just a few shots from the weekend.

USA vs Canada - My Thoughts

USA beat Canada in hockey last sunday. 5-3 was the final, and it was a great game. That said, there's a lot of talk about how the Canadians are still better than the U.S. and we only got lucky because Ryan Miller was phenomenal. Well I'd like to make a counter statement. Martin Brodeur is the goalie for canada and he faced half the number of shots and sadly, allowed more goals. Same thing happened in Canada's game against Switzerland which Canada barely won in a shoot out. The goalie is a part of your team people. And just because you take more shot doesn't mean that they're quality shots either. It's not about quantity, it's about quality. The US made the best of it's opportunities, Canada did not. Maybe Canada will straighten it out and come back and beat us in the gold medal game, should we both get there, but who knows. Let's not pretend that this is the kind of thing it used to be. These guys all play in the NHL, so they know their opponents. Some of them are facing off against NHL team mates in these games. My friend Brian said it best, if these two teams played 10 times, it'd probably be a 5-5 split. I'm not saying one is better than the other, it's just the nature of the competition these days.

iPhone App Store Gets Some Jesus

I saw this article on macrumors.com tonight and thought I'd pass it along. It's about sexual stuff so don't say I didn't warn you.

iPhone developer ChilliFresh posted (via TechCrunch) that they received an email from Apple tonight indicating that their iPhone app Wobble iBoobs had been pulled from the App Store. The email revealed that Apple was now removing overtly sexual content due to customer complaints:

"The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.

We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you believe you can make the necessary changes so that Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) complies with our recent changes, we encourage you to do so and resubmit for review.

A search of other similarly adult themed apps on AppShopper shows that many (but not all) have already been removed from the App Store.

ChilliFresh's app had been well known and generated over $260,000 in its App Store lifetime. The developer points out that his app actually ships with no images and simply uses user supplied images. Meanwhile, at least one other developer seems to have accidentally gotten caught in the crossfire with his Invisible Girl book being removed despite the developer's insistence that the ebook contains no sexual references. Of note, Playboy's official app remains on the App Store at this time.

As I'm sitting here eating my cereal, I'm looking back at college and the decisions I made about my future while I was there. And how ultimately, none of it really mattered. Towards the end of my senior year of high school, I had decided where I wanted to go to school and was down to the business of picking a major. I had my heart set on being a photography major so I figured I'd pay a visit to my uncle who was working as a photographer at the University of Illinois. His advice to me was not to waste my money on the degree, pointing out that college will teach you antiquated techniques, all of which won't do you any good in the real world. It would be best to just do the reading and practice on my own.
So with photography out of the question, I thought I'd go ahead and try my hand at student ministry. Bethel had a great program for it and I loved the faculty. But for some reason, I didn't see a future in it at the time. Oh, Jeffrey.
Now, I'm sitting at registration at Bethel, still trying to figure out what to major in. I figure music performance must be the natural choice because that's really the only other thing I wanted to do. To clarify, playing drumset was all I wanted to do, but I figured it couldn't hurt to bone up on my marimba and timpani right. But the more I looked at it, it seemed so unsafe to major in music, so I majored in Music Education.
A few years later, degree in hand, I work full time in student ministry, I freelance in photography and I still play music on the side. The only one of my four major ideas that never paid me a dime...the one I actually have a degree in.

I love Bethel Basketball and Cody Baker

I'm not much of a basketball fan but being friends with Robbie Lightfoot has made me a big fan of Bethel Basketball. They don't have much of a budget for things so whenever I can I help them out with my services, and they do great things with it. And this year, they tapped Cody Baker over at eyemotion media to make their intro video before the games. I absolutely love it. It's better than Notre Dame's and I would bet Bethel didn't even spend half of what Notre Dame spent. Check it out!

I've been wanting to buy a point and shoot camera for a really long time now. Hauling around my DSLR's is a bit of a task and if I'm just going to a party or a ball game, I don't want to bring them along. Still love the Dave Matthew's Band

I gave up on the blog for awhile and left you all hanging on a post about why I love the Dave Matthew's Band for about 4 months. I realized the only error in that post is that I didn't provide you with video evidence. Check out the band on the Grammy awards last week. Beautiful performance and when you contrast that with the Lady Gaga saga at the beginning of the show, it makes me love Dave even more. Enjoy!

Every time I get a chance to sit in a meeting with my senior pastor, my ears are pricked and I'm ready to learn. Because the older I get, the more I realize how much I do not know. I have a pastor and a leader who takes every chance he can to share his wisdom with us without forcing results, trusting that the knowledge he imparts will drive his leaders to make the right decisions. I love following these men.

Ryan Miller is the goalie for the Buffalo Sabres and in a few days, he will be in net for the U.S. Men's hockey team. Custom goalie masks have always been one of my favorite little things about hockey, and the mask that Miller had made for the Olympics is no exception. Nothing says America like a tattoo'd Uncle Sam rolling up his sleeves to stab you with what looks like a flaming spear. But seriously, it looks pretty cool.

I was at the Bethel game saturday vs Goshen College where Bethel trailed the entire first half. Then with 2.6 seconds left in the half, Ryne Lightfoot hit this shot from half court. I've been telling the story since saturday and I apparently exaggerated it a little bit, but it was just great to see something like this live!

High Speed Trains

Judging by the reactions I've heard around town the last few days, people aren't very excited about the $8 Billion dollars that the government is investing in high speed railroad development. First let me say that I am 100% for it and I'm amazed that it's taken the U.S. this long to get around to it. Read a bit of what Time Magazine had to say about it;

"America's antiquated rail system will have to advance a long way just to make it to the present, let alone the future. U.S. intercity railroads are a laughingstock compared with those in most other developed nations — and, increasingly, even those in developing nations like China, which is investing more than $300 billion to build more than 16,000 miles of high-speed track by 2020.
Today you can travel the 250 miles from Paris to Lyon on the high-speed TGV in two hours. Covering a similar distance from Philadelphia to Boston takes some five hours, and that's on an Amtrak Acela train, the closest thing the U.S. has to high-speed rail. "Every other major industrialized nation has recognized that high-speed rail is key to economic growth and mobility," says Petra Todorovich, director of the America 2050 program at the Regional Planning Association. "It's time for America to realize that as well."

I don't think I'm the only person out there in the blog-o-sphere who has lost interest in their blogs and websites with the growth of twitter. But there's moments where 140 characters just doesn't cut it. But at the same time, it doesn't have to be more than 140 to be blog worthy either. There are great things happening with my family and friends, as well as my church and my community and I might as well let you all back in on what I'm thinking.

That being said, I give it a week before I stop blogging again. Let's see if I can impress myself.

Why I CONNECT with the Dave Matthews Band

My friend Andrew Schaefer recently posted on why he loves the Dave Matthews Band. It seemed like an odd idea at the time, to have to rationalize to someone else why you like something. Because in my mind, if you like the music, you don't need a reason. But oddly, I stayed up one night thinking about exactly why I do love the Dave Matthews Band. There's a lot of reasons, one being that their first album was the first C.D. I ever owned and I listened to it for hours and hours at a time when I was a kid. Another reason might be that they have a very unique sound and varying styling that changes from song to song. Or maybe still the fact that Carter Beauford has always been one of my favorite drummers. He's not the greatest drummer with the fastest chops or anything, but I just love the outside of the box thinking that can still live in pop music...if you can call what they do pop music.

But here is why I CONNECT with the Dave Matthews Band. Look at this photo of Dave.

You may just see a guy holding guitar, but what you're not seeing is the fact that those are normal men's jeans and a regular collared shirt. He's got no rings, no tattoo's, no peircings, no eyeliner, no fancy hair, and that's the man. He's not a rockstar, he's just a musician. Sometimes I instantly tune out artists when it looks to me like they put more thought into their shoes than their music. I realize that being a musician means you're an artist, and artists probably try to express themselves in more ways than just one, but that's not and never should be the rule. I used to try and dress the part when I was younger and realized it's just completely not me. I love that Dave and the rest of the people in his band are there to make MUSIC and not fashion statements, social commentary, or anything else. That's why...

So last spring/summer we got to talking amongst the GSM staff about where we wanted to see our students in their worship over the next year. We decided that it would be an amazing value if our students attending had the opportunity to be lead by other students. Up to that point, the worship had mostly been led by staff members, interns, and adult volunteers. So with the addition of Seth as our worship leader, we set out on the task of creating a student team. I can't speak for our whole team, as I'm sure D.C. didn't doubt things for a second, but I knew that I had some concerns about what this year would bring. I'm pleased to say that things have gone better than I could have ever imaged, and our team is phenomenal. I was sitting with DC yesterday reviewing the service from last weekend and I was simply in awe of the talent and hearts God has given the students that serve at GSM. I'm so proud of them.

The North American...uh, bird-in-gutter

A few days ago, I noticed that there was a birds nest being built in a gutter outside my house. There's a window in my stair well that looks out at the nest right at eye level so every time I walk past, I peek out to see if the bird is there. Today, he was. So I sprinted downstairs to grab my camera and get a photo hoping that I'd have the opportunity to do one of those cool blog post's that our senior pastor Mark Beeson posts from time to time with his amazing nature photography. So I got the shot, came down stairs, started to type...and then I realized that even though I have my Bird Study merit badge from boy scouts, I have no idea what kind of bird that is. Nor do I know what it does, why it would be tempted to live in my gutter, and how I could apply that to our lives. I guess I could've called my mom since he undergrad degree was in Zoology but I'm guessing she has better things to do. So I'll leave that stuff to the professionals, and present you with..."bird-in-gutter."

I got to make a lot of noise on the drums, break a ton of glass, throw a ton of baseballs with an awesome student, and worship with an amazing student band this weekend. ABSOLUTELY love what's happening at GCC right now. GSM firing on all cylinders, the weekend is rockin, and most importantly...the perma-cloud has officially left south bend for the summer. Love it!

....oh and the Red Sox swept the Yankee's and I get to see them on Wednesday in Cleveland. Go Sawks

Good News / Bad News

In their retirement, my parents decided that instead of heading off to endless sun in Florida, they'd stay home and save the world one flood at a time. That topic would be the source of this good news, bad news scenario. After the flood in 2007 that you may have remembered me blogging about, my parents along with countless others in Ottawa were faced with the task of rebuilding. Two years later, and a ton of paperwork later, my folks and a few others were able to start the Putnam County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity (my mom just started their website here.) My dad was recently interviewed on local radio about the new launch, and you can listen to that here if you'd like. I'm so proud of my parents and the others who were able to start that great work back home.
The bad news is that it looks like they're going to be needed a lot sooner than they had hoped. Ottawa is in the midst of yet another flood. Some say it will be worse than the floods in 2007, while others say it could be the worst flood Ottawa has seen in the last 100 years. People have already been displaced by this flood and they're supposed to get even more rain tonight and tomorrow with no word on when exactly the river is supposed to start receding, but initial reports from this weekend say it will be up 30 feet before it comes back down. Any and all prayers would be appreciated for the people living in Ottawa.

Today, I had the movie "Miracle" on in the background while I was working on some new graphics. I usually just leave them on for white noise but something really struck me today while I was watching it. There we a moment where Herb Brooks was working with his team in practice, and he said (in reference to their jerzee's) "The name on the front is a (heck) of a lot more important than the one on that back." I played on just a few teams as a kid who were aware of that, and it all started with the coaching staffs attitude and the right group of kids. Not necessarily the best kids, but the right kids. Sadly, I played on far too many who were just a group of kids and coaches out for themselves. That's all good if it's tennis, but team sports don't do that well with that mind set. Just thinking over all of that made me realize how happy I am to be a part of a team at work that functions for the good of the whole, personal ambition aside. Good leadership with just the right people. I love my job.

Thanks to DC's genius, we pushed what our artists could do at GSM last night. We spent some time talking about what it's like to be a christian after the initial honeymoon is over and think start to get harder. So we used the opening arts package to walk through life up to that point, and then DC took over. We had one more media after the message to wrap it all up along with worship. Pittsburgh

Last weekend, I got to get out of town for a little bit and boy I needed it. I got to go with a friend of mine to go watch a friend of mine in the hometown of a friend of....I mean father of mine. Yes, my dad spent most of his childhood living on the south side of Pittsburgh and I'm pretty sure I've never been there before. So after Luke's game I got a chance to swing by and see my dad's boyhood home, high school, and some other fun Pittsburgh landmarks. At the same, I got horribly lost so... win win. Luke had a great game against Pitt, scoring 18 points in the first half alone, all off of 3 pointers (6-8). Unfortunately, he did the rest of his shooting in his mind since Coach Brey, in his infinite wisdom, decided not to play him in the second half and Notre Dame lost blew their halftime lead and lost by 12. Aaaanyway, Pittsburgh was fun, especially since it was the day before the super bowl and the Steeler fans were out in full force. Enjoy the pictures!

I've gotten tagged in this post on facebook by about 50 different people and I'm not the kind of guy to do that who chain letter things. So if you really want to know 25 random things about me, I will tell you. But the chain ends here.

1. I have a birth defect in my rib cage where the bones bend outwards. Kind of the exact opposite of being spoon chested.

2. My nickname in high school wrestling was Gumbi. Flexible enough to get out of anything but not strong enough to hold anything down.

3. I thought I was an artist when I was a kid, so I was super excited when I won the language arts award in first grade thinking it actually had something to do with art.

4. My first grade teacher had a laminated smiley face just for me that I could bring home and show my parents if I behaved all the way through the day. I think it only came home about seven times.

5. While I love star wars and the lord of the rings, I have absolutely no interest in Harry Potter. Never read any of the books, never saw any of the movies.

6. Once in college, I slept from 2 a.m. friday night til 6:30 p.m. the following evening.

7. Sometimes I get a little emotional when I hear "The Buckeye Battle Cry" and I didn't even go to school there. (grandpa did though)

8. I remember wanting to join the marines out of high school and somehow I think my recruiter actually managed to talk me out of it. I think my mom paid him off. Ironic thing about it is that if I had enlisted right after graduation, I would've finished boot camp in June and my advanced training in september of 2001. We went to war that september.

9. My dad is a drummer and he and I have never sat down and played together

10. I never considered myself very coordinated as far as piano goes, but the first time I played in public I was supposed to play two songs. I played the left hand part of one song and the right hand part of the other for about 10 bars, then vice versa, before finally getting it right. That takes talent.

11. I shot a duck in flight with a 22 rifle from a canoe in Noatak, Alaska

12. I broke my right arm in 3 places throwing a dodgeball.

13. I broke my right index finger knuckle and had to have three pins put in after my fist glanced off a friends face into a brick wall my freshman year in college. We were upset about our lack of game on valentine's day. We made up 45 minutes later.

14. When I'm at home in Ohio, my favorite place to take a nap is the floor in my bathroom. (No one bothers you in the bathroom)

15. I got lost in the mall of america when I was 11

16. I've been whitewater rafting on the New River 4 times.

17. I am an eagle scout

18. I have never been to Hawaii and I'm not sure I have a desire to go.

19. I want to take a train from New York to Los Angeles once before I die.

20. I've met a lot of important people living in south bend like Sinbad, Muhammed Ali, Jay Billas, Bill Rafftery, Charlie Weiss, Brady Quinn, Remo Belli, the parents from that 70's show, Mark Brunell (etc.) but sadly I've never been more nervous then when I met Ellis Hampton at a Cavaliers Audition. I almost pee'd myself.

21. I've had my car broken into three times since I've moved to South Bend

23. I take baths, not showers (unless I'm late)

The People Around You...

I'm sure most of you have heard by now that today was not the greatest of days work wise. Monday was actually called "Bloody Monday" by some as some major companies announced down sizing and laid of some 71,400 people. Over 200,000 jobs have been terminated since the beginning of this year, and over 2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008; the most in over 50 years. Those statistics seemed pretty distant until today. I'd say it was an emotional day but I think that would imply that I landed on one emotion. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to do that. But there was certainly a lot of blank staring. Luckily, God did make a few things clear to me and to a lot of people around the church today.
I became keenly aware of the fact that sometimes, maybe a lot of the time, my plans are not God's plan. I realized that my grip on my present reality had gotten a lot tighter than I wanted it to be and I need to re-evaluate a lot of my decisions personally, professionally, and financially. And lastly, I realized that I have some amazing people around me that are unbelievably supportive and no economy is changing that.

In the 10 years that I've been playing drums I've played shows with a lot of different people playing lots of different kinds of music. Playing music with Seth Abram Bible is unique. I don't think I've ever had the opportunity to play with anyone quite like Seth. Let me show you the small differences between shows with Seth and shows I've played with other folks.

*People actually show up to hear him.
*He get's excited about his music
*He's the fun kind of humble, not the annoying kind.
*He confesses things to the audience he shouldn't, but it creates a cool connection sometimes.
*I once had to hold my iPhone to his ear while playing the intro of a song so he could listen to the actual recording to remember the first line. It was great

Last night, the No. 1 ranked basketball team in the country and the only unbeaten remaining was upset at home by an unranked opponent, and another top 10 team was also upset. Nobody probably saw it though because primetime t.v. was on. I tried to enjoy the moment with someone last night, but everybody was watching the Lost season premier. So since I'm still bitter that I had to sit on my couch alone and experience that. I'm going to give my opinion on popular t.v.

"JAYDIOHEAD" Mash Up of Jay-Z and Radiohead Music

I've got a few things to preempt this with. First off, I loved the Linkin Park and Jay-Z collaboration. But I really liked both sides of that mash up before they came together . Not so with Radiohead. I have never really listened to Radiohead's music, mainly because their fans have turned me off (same goes for Phish, The Greatful Dead, and O.A.R.). Maybe one of these days I'll give them a good listen. That being said, I really liked that mash up. Maybe I just love Jay-Z and I'll take any incarnation of his music, but it's possible that Radiohead is just that good and I've been missing it all these years. Oh, and it's free from the Jaydiohead Website.

"Fiction Family" Self Titled debut for a project with Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek)

I love it. To be honest, if you had told me it was just another one of Jon Foreman's E.P.'s I wouldn't have really known (minus the few tracks that Sean Watkins sings on). But it's very very cool and certainly enough to tide me over until Switchfoot comes out with a new album.

My parents decided they would let me do a little christmas wish listing on B&H this year via giftcard. That landed me with a great new lens that I'm really excited to start using. I am now the proud owner of a Canon Fisheye EF 15mm f/2.8 Autofocus Lens. I couldn't be happier to get all up in peoples faces and make them look all bubble like and weird. Exciting.

New Series - Dear God

I'm really excited about our new series at GSM. "Dear God" kicked off sunday night and I really believe this series is going to be a good beginning for 2009. Students got their chance to ask God anything, and we (through the help of God's word) are going to do our best to try and answer their questions. DC did a great job talking about purpose on sunday, and I'm so excited about the coming weeks.

Gran Torino - Review

Let me paint a picture for you.

In the last scene of the movie, you see a 16 year old asian american boy driving a 1970's classic muscle car down a lake michigan highway with a 10 year old yellow lab in the passenger seat. In the background, you can hear Clint Eastwood singing a song about the aforementioned car which eventually fades over to Jamie Cullum singing.

This is the kind of randomness you can expect from this movie.

Bad: Acting, script writing, a lot of ethnic slurs, cinematography
Good: Portrayal of a crotchety old man, Representation of the prejudice of an older generation, Representation of the work ethic of an older generation, ending

In review, it's not at all what I expected, but I still liked it.

Team of Rivals

I'm staring a new book today called "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It's about the 'political genius of Abraham Lincoln' as the tag line suggests. Lincoln took several of the other candidates that were running for the Republican nomination and made them his cabinet. Hopefully this book is going to teach the value of having people around you who disagree with you and how working with that is for the better of the people you serve.
As I was looking online to get a photo of this book for the blog post, I found this picture of President Elect Barak Obama reading the same book. I wonder if some of this same wisdom is why he named Hilary as his Secretary of State. My brother bought me a good book I guess.

I honestly have no idea why so many people didn't like this movie. It was maybe a little long but that was my only beef. It was a great story, kept me trying to figure it out the whole time, and even had an almost tear moment. Good stuff. I mean come on, how can you not like a Will Smith movie?

I'm a bandwagon fan

As a sports fan, it's kind of frowned upon to be a band wagon fan. For those of you who don't know what that means, a bandwagon fan is a person who switches support to whatever team/game/allegiance/belief happens to be successful at the time. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I completely switch. I have my teams...The Red Sox, The N. Y. Rangers, and the Colts (still thinking about whether I'm a celtics fan). I will not ever be abandoning them. But I hop on some bandwagons from time to time and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. When people who seem to be constantly doomed for failure start to do well and have sucess, I'm legitimately happy for them. Maybe that makes me a bad sports fan, but I'm pretty sure it makes me a good person. Seems like I keep getting on and off the Cub's bandwagon. I really really want them to win a world series. I sympathize with them about their drought, but mostly I grow tired of hearing about 'this is the year' from their fans. And by the looks of the off season moves they're making, this year won't be the year either.

The band wagon I'll be getting on for 2008 is the Boston Bruins band wagon. They're one of the oldest franchises in the NHL. They're also the old home to one of my favorite players, Ray Bourque. Ray played for them for a long long time with no Stanley Cups, so he peaced out to play for a winner at the end of his career, and retired after hoisting the cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001 (at least it wasn't the red wings). Anyway, the bruins have been bad for as long as I've been a hockey fan, and they're killing it this year. So if you see me wearing some bruins apparel when they make it to the playoffs this year, don't yell at me. I'm well aware of what I'm doing. I guess the only problem is, the Rangers aren't bad this year either and they're in the same conference. Hmmmmm.....moral dilemas.
